Berlin sightseeing and things to do in city
Long and complicated history of Berlin as the capital of the Electorate of Margraviate, the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire and currently of Germany made this city rich in landmarks. The most known of them is the Brandenburg Gate that towers amid linden tree avenue (Unter den Linden) for more than 200 years. Initially Friedrich Wilhelm II planned to have 18 gates leading to the city with Brandenburg being the main one. But architect Gotthard Langhans designed only one gate, the gate of the world aka the Brandenburg Gate, with 12 massive columns and 5 passageways. On the top there is a symbolic sculpture of goddess Eirene riding the quadriga. The sculpture is so great that even Napoleon Bonaparte couldn't resist its charm when he conquered Berlin in 1806. He ordered to demount the chariot and took it to France. However, in a few years Eirene returned to its primary place and was renamed to Victoria. The monument suffered during the WWII but later on it regained its past beauty. While visiting Berlin you will find here other great sights, like the Berlin Wall covered with colourful graffiti or the Berlin Cathedral, a perfect example of baroque-styled church. You should stay in Berlin for a few days to have enough time for seeing all the attractions there.
