Istanbul sightseeing and things to do in city
Founded in about the 7th century BC, a small town of the Roman Empire grew into a large city, which in 330 AD was picked up by Constantine the Great as the capital city. Since that time it has been the capital of three more great empires: the Byzantine Empire, the Latin Empire and the last Ottoman Empire. Each era left a trace in Istanbul's history as well as architecture. Hagia Sophia is the world-famous monument of the East Roman Empire architecture, the symbol of the "Golden Age" of Byzantium. But later on the Eastern Orthodox cathedral was turned into the Imperial Mosque in the middle of the 15th centuries. Now this is a beautiful museum complex visited by millions of tourists. During the time of ruling of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman imperial mosque named Süleymaniye Mosque was erected. Shortly after that another great architectural masterpiece appeared on the sight map of Istanbul – the Blue Mosque, the name got from its beautiful interior colour. Today all these places of worship are popular landmarks of the city, which is no more a capital city, though the major commercial, economical and cultural centre of Turkey. Come here from Washington to see all that with your own eyes.
