Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is one of the largest in China. It is located 16 km from downtown Chengdu, and is one of the 50 busiest airports in the world. In 2011 Chengdu Shuangliu handled approximately 29 million passengers. In 2012 the new Terminal 2 was opened in the airport, and nowadays it can handle up to 35 million passengers and serve 20 international and domestic destinations. In 2009 a new runway was constructed, 3,600 m long and 60 m wide. So the airport is capable of handling large aircraft, such as Airbus A380. The airport premises used to be headquarters for ChinaSouthwestAirlines until 2002, when they merged with AirChina. Currently, the airport houses around 20 airline offices and organizations (such as the Civil Aviation Agency of Southwest China), and is one of the five largest airports in terms of passenger traffic. Shuangliu International Airport is a major hub for the three largest civil airlines in China: Air China, Sichuan Airlines and Chengdu Airlines. It is easy to get from the airport to the downtown Chengdu by any type of public transport operating 24 hours a day.
