Istanbul sightseeing and things to do in city
Istanbul is the city of various names and complicated history. It was the capital of four mighty empires from the Roman Empire up to the Ottoman Empire. It was initially named Byzantium, but then renamed by the Constantine the Great into the New Rome, which was used as an official name but mostly known as Constantinople (the city of Constantine). Then for some time it bore the name of Tsarigrad, Stamboul and at last we know it under the name Istanbul. It witnessed a lot of destructive events of rise and fall of empires, wars and earthquakes. As a result today each epoch can be traced through city's landmarks. The greatest of them, and probably the most visited, are Hagia Sophia mosque, which is no more a place of worship but a museum open to public, and the Blue Mosque erected on an order of Sultan Ahmed I. This great architectural masterpiece is still used as a mosque, though visited by tourists mostly for the sake of architectonic value rather than spiritual inspiration. These are must-see landmarks of Istanbul, so make sure to visit them once you come from Columbus.
