Guangzhou, also known as Canton, is served by one international airport - Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, which is the largest airport in South China. In Chinese "Baiyun" means "white clouds". The airport is located in Huadu district 28 km from the city centre. It was opened on August 5, 2004 as a replacement for the old airport, which could not handle the fast-growing passenger traffic. The airport is the hub for China Southern Airlines. Until recently there was only one terminal and two runways handling domestic and international flights to almost 100 destinations. By now the second terminal and the third runway have been completed and it is planned to build a transportation centre, indoor and outdoor car parks and a subway station. The airport is linked to the downtown Canton by a network of public buses and trains.
